Championship preview from Teamtalk

26 June 2009

It's all or nothing for these two sides in the second game at St.Colmcilles Park as neither are setting the world alight in the league as they both struggle to find any degree of consistency. Both have had similar league campaigns to date in that they made promising starts before suffering a number of defeats and for one of them this is a golden opportunity to keep their season alive.

This will be the Clarkes second championship outing of the campaign after they beat Drumragh in the preliminary round tie at Plunkett Park Pomeroy.  The final score was 0-8 to 0-6 but the Clarkes survived a late scare when their keeper Sean Coulter saved a penalty that would have levelled the score at the time. It was a keenly contested affair throughout with the Sarsfields eager to repeat their shock league win at O'Neill Park back at the end of last month. This time round though the Clarkes were always in front and while it was close in the end it was a game that they always looked the likely winners.

Karl Doran, Dominic Hand and John Loughran stood out in a winners defence that restricted the Drumragh starting attack to just one point from play, the Treanor brothers Declan and Darren shaded the midfield battle while up front Conor McGinn, Conal Morgan and Eugene Faloon all worked hard for the winners. The Clarkes have already lost five times this year and while they could still make the promotion play offs there is no doubt that the championship represents their best chance of a quick return to Intermediate football.

Glenelly began the season on fire when they won their opening three games but since then they have managed to only obtain three more points from seven outings as their form has dipped alarmingly. They have a side that is a mixture of youth and experience with a few players on board who brought minor success to the club last season. They will look for big performances from the likes of Ruairi McConnell, Conal McCullagh and Colm Hicks in defence, Ciaran Kearney and Joe McCullagh in midfield and Ronan O'Kane, Kevin McCullagh and Kevin McAnena up front.

It's a game that could go either way with the Clarkes taken to edge the verdict.
